Long Grove’s Anti-Growth Movement

Friday, July 25th, 2008

While many towns and suburbs in the Chicago area have plans to expand and develop further, Long Grove has an anti-development plan. It was during the early 1950s when many suburbs began implementing large-scale development plans. In Long Grove, however, property owners formed an organization to oppose any major development strategies. Long Grove property owners were concerned with preserving the town’s historic character. In order to build a new home it was required that it be built on at least a 3-acre lot.

Several ordinances were passed which banned neon signs and the development of convenience and chain stores. All stores and shops had to feature 1880s-style facades. The ordinances are still in place to this day. Long Grove area is well known for its historic downtown and exclusive million dollar home communities. Even though Long Grove is not growing rapidly like other suburbs, it is still a very desirable place to live. Long Grove made Money Magazine’s 2007 list for best places to live in the U.S.
