Long Grove’s German Ancestry

The town of Long Grove was founded by German immigrants from the Rhineland. They arrived in the area in the 1840s only to discover that other immigrants had already claimed the open prairie, so they settled deep within the grove. The land there was very good for farming and the community thrived. The original town name was Muttersholz, which is German for “mother woods.”

The name later changed to Long Grove during WWI when German culture was frowned upon in the U.S and Long Grove residents began making more use of the English language. The heavy German influence is still very apparent today. Almost one-fourth of the population boasts German Ancestry. The architecture of the homes and shops is very old-style German. Many of the homes and barns are built in the German farm-style. The town still resembles an old German village. Every year the village’s residents come together to celebrate Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a celebration of German heritage where everyone enjoys German food, drink and music.

Long Grove is very popular today with German tourists. It is also a very desirable place to live. The town has been preserved in the old German style, so it is very beautiful. The homes are especially gorgeous. Browse Long Grove’s beautiful homes at Long Grove Real Estate
